Story of Ball and the Doctors Chronograph - BALL Watch Company founder Webb C. Ball took up the challenge of creating the perfect railroad watch in the aftermath of the disastrous 1891 Kipton train wreck. The Official Railroad Standard BALL Watch became known as the best, most durable timepiece a hard-working railroad man could ask for. The spirit and the friendship of the heroes of the American Railroad Brotherhoods inspired Ball in his work.
The quest for perfection ingrained in the brand by Webb C. Ball is the motivating force behind the new limited edition Trainmaster Doctor’s Chronograph. When BALL designers thought of the idea of reintroducing a doctor’s watch with stopwatch and pulse scale, we sought out the ideal candidate for inspiration.
At 14,000 feet above sea level in the Himalayan Mountains, Dr. Christopher Hillman travels on a motorbike among different communities providing healthcare for emergencies and house calls. He often works from atop a glacier and the bamboo bench that serves as his waiting room, seats 60. Logistical problems are often insurmountable and timing is critical. Often patients need to be transported over long distances to receive the necessary care. Equipment must be specially designed to withstand the long, cold winter, and most instruments do not pass the test.
“Time is an essential part of my day, because without the correct time people would die. Correct time is crucial during the basic physical exam for heart rate, pulse, and respiration. The environmental conditions are harsh, especially during the cold months, when all watches freeze. A timepiece that keeps the correct time at -40 simply just saves lives.”
During the course of a hectic day, doctors like Dr. Hillman in the Himalayas and the local ER doctors must monitor the progress of their many patients to ensure a speedy recovery.
The BALL Trainmaster Doctor’s Chronograph transforms this into an easy task. When the doctor stops the chronograph, the pulsemeter scale displays the exact pulse for him, with no complicated calculation required.
The month, day and date are displayed in a single row at the 3 o’clock position, an innovative BALL in-house modification that makes a doctor’s work brilliantly simple.
The simplified dial with a pulsation scale is graduated for 15 pulsations. Our single-button chronograph movement allows the start, stop, and reset functions to be controlled with just one finger for quicker measurement of pulse and respiration rates, and also minimizes human error due to reaction time to ensure a more accurate reading. The pulsemeter can also be used to measure respiration rate or any other repetitive action, like factory production or steps per minute.
“The area where I live is often referred to as the top of the world, winters here are extremely harsh. Everything freezes in the winter; batteries freeze all the time. I have two sets of batteries when I am using battery-powered equipment. One set I keep next to my body and periodically I switch them. Even the photography is affected – the frigid temperature slows the shutter speed causing the pictures to be overexposed. I usually can take pictures only for a short time, once the camera freezes; photography is finished for the day.”
The BALL Trainmaster Doctor’s Chronograph can be read easily in the most difficult of conditions, thanks to the patented BALL micro gas tubes that require neither batter power nor an outside light source for charging. The BALL gas tubes will glow continuously for up to 25 years - Because when professionals need to use their watch, they should be able to depend on it.
