Special Edition Polluce Anonimo, the official watch of CNS (Cooperativa Nationale Sommmozzatori) the famous Italian diving company, has developed the Polluce diving watch worn by CNS divers in partnership with Marine Consulting Srl. This watch commemorates the successful discovery of the Polluce Steamer ship that sank in 1841 in the Tyrrhenian Sea off the coast of Tuscany. Sanctioned by the Italian Government to recover the gold bullion treasure valued in the hundreds of millions of dollars, CNS divers continue their long- standing partnership with Anonimo to provide actual diving experiences that test our diving watches in real underwater conditions. The CNS partnership has been the foundation of our ability to create and manufacture authentic professional diving watches that can only be certified after facing actual under water experience. This partnership allows Anonimo to collect data and review the performance of each watch actually worn by CNS divers in the continual effort to improve the performance of our diving watch tradition. The partnership has been responsible for the development of Anonimo Models Professionale 200 ATM, Hi-Dive 121 ATA, and Polluce 121 ATA.
The Treasure of Polluce The history of the Polluce steamer begins in the middle of the 1800 and only in October 2005 its precious treasure, which is the only great treasure found in the Italian Sea, came to the surface from the depth water of the Elba Isle.
The Polluce steamer was purchased by the Rubattino Company from Genova and since April 1841 it had been sailing on the course Naples-Marseille.
After only two months at sea, it sank in the Piombino Channel due to the collision with the Neapolitan steamer Mongibello.
All the members of the crew survived except one, but the ship disappeared under the sea with its shipment of great value: gold and silver coins, jewels and cameos, diamonds and emeralds and all that the rich passengers had brought in their passage. According to the historical memories, the Polluce carried also a golden carriage belonged to the Borboni family.
In the book “ l’Oro dell’Elba – Operazione Polluce”, the authors Enrico Cappelletti and Gianluca Mirto assert that probably the shipwreck was not completely accidental. They report that it was caused by the rival company for economical and political reasons, connected to the revolutionary rebellions of the Italian Risorgimento. The huge quantity of money on the ship was probably set aside for the revolutionary supporters of Giuseppe Mazzini and it was not by chance that the Rubattino Company itself provided two ships for the Thousands Expedition in 1860.
Some months after the shipwreck, the Rubattino Company tried to recover the steamer without success and since then all the references about the coordinates of the wreckage were lost. The Polluce became a legend for the treasure hunters. In 2000 a group of English divers tried to rescue part of the shipment illegally, but it was luckily found and given back to the Italian Government.
Thanks to the financial support of many sponsors (HDS Italia, Marine Consulting srl, C.N.S. Cooperativa Nazionale Sommozzatori, Capmar Studios, the Comune of Porto Azzurro), in October 2005 the recovery operation of the Polluce started again, employing a special diving technique, so far traditionally reserved to the Off-Shore world.
The operation has been successful and the precious material will be soon exposed in a Museum on the Elba Isle.
